SCD (Save the Children
Cambodia for Development) is a place of hopes, dreams and
peace, providing poor children a better life now and in the
future.
Vison
All children should have equal right to education, protection and social participation in Cambodia and the rest of the world.
Mission
Save the Children Cambodia for Development is a benevolent, non-profit, local organization dedicated to improving the welfare of children. Our mission is to provide education, life skills and a happy environment to children who have been denied these due to their circumstances of poverty, loss of parent, AIDs and victims of landmines.
Purpose
Our primary purpose is to help create a better quality of life for these children by providing them with a permanent home until the age of 18. The orphanage provides for orphans who suffer from hopelessness, depression, or who are unable to care for their daily living due to poverty or psychological problems, especially the children whose parents have been affected by explosives or AIDS. It provides a place where orphans can be housed, fed, dressed, treated, educated and given counseling if necessary in a loving and peaceful environment. Save the Children Cambodia for Development will partner with other nonprofit organizations and committed individuals that can help us to meet our goals.
Goal
Save the children
Cambodia for Development aims at:
- Reducing the number of orphans living in poor conditions.
- Reducing poverty by providing a safe and loving environment with food, shelter, medical attention and schooling.
- Providing the education and training necessary for these children to enjoy a bright future.
Philisophy
Today Cambodia is in the midst of rebuilding itself, socially, economically and psychologically. The scars of the past, however will take decades to heal. The people of Cambodia are among the poorest in the world, trying to rebuild a country where most of the governmental and social structures were destroyed.
The fact that most of the educated people, especially, men in the country, were killed in the Red Communist purge makes the rebuilding an overwhelming task, in many poor families, female children are forced to discontinue school to help with farm work or housework.
Regretfully, only 20% of high school students are female. Sadly, it is not uncommon for young teenage girls to be lured into brothels where they become trapped in the world of prostitution. If young girls and boys survive, poverty usually hinders them from going to school or they drop out at a very early age. This is so the girls can tend to younger siblings and cook for their families, and the boys can assist on their parent’s farm or find a job that are often difficult and dangerous.
So today, many orphans and extremely poor families are destitute and unable to support themselves or send their children to school. The majority of these orphans will receive no government support and urgently need our help.
Viewing this miserable situation Mr. Chan Norn with great support from foreign donors decided to take action to help these orphans and improve the general situation for developing human resources in this country.
Our
History
There is an urgent need to have a center for orphans who require close observation and care. Without our help, these children will exist in misery with no hope or a chance for a better future. The organization was formed in 2005 by Mr. Chan Norn (a Cambodian national) to establish an orphanage on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. The SCD offices and orphanage are situated near the international airport (Pochentong Phnom Penh) and close to the city center. SCD has been registered with the Royal Government of Cambodia as an official NGO (non-governmental organization) named Save the Children Cambodia for Development. SCD is serving as an orphanage which also helps, encourages and educates the orphans and the poorest children living in the surrounding community.
